Sally was born and bred to defend- by having two criminal defense attorneys for parents. Discussions about constitutional rights and strategies of defense were a nightly occurrence around the dinner table. From a very young age Sally knew that her passion was to serve her community as a criminal defense attorney. Sally graduated Magna Cum Laude from California State University, Fresno and received a Bachelor of Science in Criminology, Forensics Behavioral Science. While attending Fresno State, Sally’s son was enrolled in preschool on campus. The other parents in the program nominated Sally to serve as a voting member of the Board of the California State University of Fresno Programs for Children, where she served for two years. It was during this time that Sally learned how important children are to our society and became dedicated to giving back to youth however she could.
After earning her bachelor’s degree and obtaining offers to enroll at a variety of law schools, Sally decided to stay in the Central Valley and attend San Joaquin College of Law. With an ardor for writing, she wrote for the San Joaquin Agricultural Law Review and was appointed to be its Editor-in-Chief. As a lawyer, she continues to utilize her writing skills by advocating for her clients in law and motions and writing articles calling for improvement to the criminal justice system.
During her time in law school, Sally was also recognized for her writing abilities by being awarded Best Brief Finalist in the George Hopper Moot Court Competition in addition to being Best Oral Advocate Finalist for her unfettered representation. As a result, she was chosen to represent the law school at the State competition in the Roger J. Traynor Appellate Moot Court Competition where she won an award for Outstanding Individual Oral Achievement presented by the CEB (Continued Education of the Bar).
In addition to her achievements competing on behalf of her law school, Sally won numerous scholarships and awards recognizing her dedication to the law and her desire to succeed, such as Witkin Awards for Academic Excellence in Legal Analysis, Real Property Law, and Remedies; the Ernest S. Kinney Scholarship; the Fresno County Bar Association Harry Zekian Scholarship; and the Daryl B. Freedman Bar Study Support Scholarship. As a result of her academic achievements, Sally graduated with distinction from San Joaquin College of Law.
Sally worked at a local well-respected criminal law firm for nearly five years before starting Proper Defense Law Corporation. After working with some of Fresno’s most experienced criminal defense attorneys she felt it was the right time to open her own firm by taking the experience, knowledge and wisdom she had gained and offering a service to her clients in which one attorney handles all aspects of their case.
Managing a law practice and focusing on her clients is very time consuming, yet Sally manages to find time to give back to her Fresno community. She is actively involved in the community through various organizations including: St. Agnes Women’s Club in which she served on the Board of Directors as the Treasurer and presently is the President, Fresno County Women Lawyers she served on the Board of Directors as its Communications Chair, Leadership Fresno Class 33, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Fresno County Bar Association, Pacific Juvenile Defenders, and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
Sally is always striving to learn more to benefit her clients. She often attends seminars to learn the most up to date techniques to use in the courtroom as well as new case law to support arguments for motions and appellate work.
